Leadership is not:

  • Dumping work and never abandoning tasks or responsibilities without proper handoff and support negatively impacts team efficiency, overall user experience, and project costs.

  • Competitive environment: We want our best designers to mentor other designers, not shut them down. Delivering work should never feel like a competition; we’re all on the same team.

  • Goals based solely on company performance: Each team member needs specific, actionable goals that improve their skills, which indirectly and most often directly relate to our business goals.

  • No growth opportunities: Each designer is unique, and so is their career growth. The more you push them into a mold, the less likely they are to feel motivated about growth.

  • There are no salary audits. Times change, and so does salary. Ensuring your team understands how much the company values their time and efforts is important.

  • Always β€œThe Intern,” as your team grows, you need to provide them with new opportunities to continue expanding their skills and not allow them to get stuck in their ways.

Leadership is:

Daily Happiness

  • I will always defend the team’s ability to unplug and balance their workload.

  • Find happiness in their projects, or help navigate the company to find work that does.

As involved as needed

  • Outside of regularly scheduled syncs, I learn when/how to interact and collaborate.

  • I have complete trust in you and your capabilities. We’re all professionals here.

  • I’ll join you in the 11th hour, the fire drill, and the last-minute stakeholder presentation.

Celebrating the Wins & Provide Feedback

  • Acknowledge the great work being done at the moment. I will bring feedback of all types to the team in the moment and deliver it in a sincere and empathic way. I will never lurk around to catch you doing something wrong.

Facing Challenges

  • Staying connected has reached new challenges, nothing can top a whiteboard session, but understanding the importance of connecting and community helps us get through the ever shifting future.

Hitting Goals

  • We’ve got a user group to represent and a business to grow. It’s important the team is motivated and in the loop regarding what the company expects of us and itself.

Empathy & Listening

  • Understanding why is the root of UX, the same curiosity applies to our team and those we work with. Empathizing with others builds trust and stronger teams.

  • Frequent one and ones, and participation in group chats to help build and establish trust/relationship.

Problem-Solving

  • This is the best part of our career, I push my teams to always be eager to ID and solve the right problems.

Ample Growth

  • Always know and discuss how your career is/should be growing and what opportunities you can make to accomplish those hopes and dreams. I collaborate with the team through retrospectives to improve weekly.

Shared Knowledge

  • I want to learn from you as much as I’d like you to learn from me. I’m not afraid of someone being better than me at something since that’s an opportunity to learn something new or improve!
